We have provided a brief list of some of the most commonly used types of residence permits below, but there are also several more specialized permits available. For ease of determination, we recommend that you contact us to determine which type of residence permit you are eligible for.
Provided that the conditions for the initial registration of the residence permit remain satisfied and a certain number of years of uninterrupted residence in the country have elapsed, the permit may be renewed.
Any third-country national who is financially self-sufficient with a fixed annual income that can cover their living expenses, and who has obtained a special entry visa, is entitled to a two-year residence permit in our country. This permit can be renewed as long as the income criterion continues to be met.
The amount of financial resources required for the above-mentioned criteria is determined by a joint ministerial decision in accordance with paragraph 7 of article no. 136 of Law 4251/2014. As of today, this amount is set at a minimum of €3.500 per month. If the third-country national is accompanied by their family members, as defined by paragraph 1 of article no. 1 of Law 4251/2014, the required amount of financial resources is increased by 20% for the spouse and by 15% for each child.
The financial resources must be proven through foreign pensions, bank accounts, or evidence of legal origin demonstrating that the applicant has sufficient financial means to cover their living expenses without being dependent on work or engaging in independent economic activity during their stay in Greece.
NOTE: Family members are defined as: (a) spouses who have reached the age of 21 (only one spouse is permitted); (b) unmarried children under the age of 21, common children of the spouses, as well as adopted children; and (c) unmarried children under the age of 21 who are the responsibility of the breadwinner or the other spouse, as well as adopted children.
In cases of polygamy, entry (and residence) in Greece is not granted to a second or another wife.
If a third-country national wishes to engage in either dependent work or independent economic activity in Greece and has obtained a special entry visa, they are entitled to a two-year residence permit in the country. As long as the income criterion is met, the permit can be renewed.
In combination with the right to transfer their health coverage rights, any pensioner who chooses to reside permanently in Greece will enjoy not only preferential taxation rates but also full social rights as in their home country.
